Two SUNSETS & MOON RISES
A very welcome week of decent weather following weeks of mainly rain, has increased the chances of capturing sunsets and has coincided with low tide being around sunset times and therefore allowing for nice reflections. An added bonus the past two days, has been that the almost full moon and then the full moon (Worm Moon) have risen after sunset and been reflected in the wet sand at low tide. On Monday, I only wandered out to the shallow waters left by the receding tide and t

Waves, Motion & Sunset
The weather has been disappointing for a few weeks, with much rain and wind which combined sometimes with adverse tide heights at the relevant times have precluded me from taking sunset photos (never mind sunrise either). This afternoon was very pleasant and with sunset due while the tide was midway through incoming, I ventured out onto East Beach to take advantage of the decent conditions. My plan was to shoot patterns and movement from incoming waves ahead of the sun settin

Awesome Sunset
Having finally bought a 'new for me' but used 24-105mm zoom lens to fill the gap in the range of the 2 zooms that I have been using, I was eager to venture out for sunset to try that lens out. The forecast was correct and after a mainly sunny day, with the tide being between low and high but on the way in, I set off to see what I might capture. I actually set off a little early, as the sun was still up and quite bright, so I initially focussed on the incoming small waves wher

Finally, A Sunrise
After a quite a long gap, mainly due to weather, tide and work not suitably combining - I have finally been out on the beach for a sunrise. I chose to venture towards Rustington , along the seafront heading East from home. As the sunrise was due just ahead of low tide, there was plenty of wet sand to reflect the pre-sunrise colours and several patches of interesting sand patterns left by that receding tide. Out on the beach, it was a little breezy and very cold but I could se

Creativity at Sunset
The forecast for the coming week is for very showery weather, so with yesterday being a lovely Winter day I opted to make the most of the opportunity to take sunset photos on East Beach. At this time of year, the sun sets out to sea and the tide was on its way in so my creativity was going to be tested for interesting compositions. Initially, I set up my tripod looking towards the still bright sun and included one of the wooden groynes to add detail. Plus I particularly liked

Sunset on East Beach
A combination of circumstances have precluded me from venturing out for sunsets recently, mainly weather or tide height. But last Monday the conditions looked favourable as the sunset was due about an hour after low tide and it was a sunny day for most part. I usually aim to go to the beach about half an hour ahead of the expected sunset time, as colours start to appear before the sun dips below the horizon. Walking out towards the wave line of the now incoming tide, the san

Littlehampton Bonfire & Fireworks
This is the first year that we have lived in Littlehampton and we were told a while ago that we would be in a prime position for the annual Bonfire & Fireworks, which are held on East Green - right opposite home and with our 3rd floor balcony we were afforded an elevated and superb view. Held on Saturday evening, though the funfair rides and food stalls were open earlier, the scene that greeted me on arrival home from work was already spectacular. The funfair rides were all i

Colourful Reflections
On Monday evening the tide was low and the small clouds to the West looked promising for sunset, with me hoping for those clouds to catch some colour as the sun set. Initially the sun was still too high and bright for the photos, even with an ND filter attached to lens. I took a few as the sun highlighted the sand patterns left by the receding tide. Ref: QA9326 - ahead of sunset - during Sunset on East Beach, Littlehampton. While taking the above photo, I noticed the serene

Wave Motion & Clouds
Similar to the position the other week, sunset was due too close to high tide for me to attempt to capture the actual sunset. However, venturing out onto the beach ahead of sunset time allowed me the chance to concentrate on the wave motion as the waves created by a keen breeze washed ashore. It was also possible to get some sunlight on the white water on the leading edges of the waves and some colour in the clouds as sunset time got closer. Living down here in Littlehampton

Wave Motion & Colour - another great evening
Yesterday evening as the sun finally made a very welcome appearance and the tide height was more favourable than recently, I decided that I would try to capture the wave motion as the small incoming waves wash ashore and then ebb back and was hoping that I could also get the setting sun to highlight the white water on the leading edges of those waves. The tide was sufficiently far in to preclude me from venturing further South on the beach to take actual sunset photos, as the

High Tide & Long Exposures
Following on from previous shoots where I have captured wave motion via long exposures, I had the idea of trying both those parameters during a higher tide rather than the easier low tide conditions. I opted to venture out ahead of sunset, with the hope that the setting sun would create some colour for me. Setting up my tripod on the beach close to the incoming waves and fitting my reverse grad ND filter to my 17-40mm zoom, I composed my first photos where I could fill the fr

What an Evening
Yesterday, I wanted to try sunset photos around high tide and at the River Arun. However, the evening evolved into a longer and quite varied shoot as different photo opportunities presented themselves. Having walked along to the river and harbour area, the sunlight was initially too bright and we opted to walk along to East Pier. As we arrived there, I could see the sun shining on the wooden groynes and also highlighting the edge of small breaking waves so I headed out onto t

Waves & Sunset
Now, about yesterday - I had a good afternoon shooting pictures of waves on an incoming tide, but then I had an incredible evening taking photos around sunset at high tide and particularly some slow exposure pics of the ebb and flow of breaking waves on the beach. The conditions in the afternoon looked suitable for photos of waves tumbling on the incoming tide. I ventured out to the beach armed with my 100-400mm zoom so that I could zoom in as tight as I wanted. After dinner,

My first Littlehampton Sunrise
Two weeks after moving into a seafront flat in Littlehampton, I finally caught the opportunity to photograph the sunrise. A hurried get-up and rush across to the beach was followed by rapidly working out where to start to take the photos. The pre sunrise colours had already started and the potential was obvious and exciting. The tide was out and that had left patterns in the wet sand, while the colours were reflecting in that wet sand and starting to light up the cloudless ho

Littlehampton - a change of scenery
Well, having hankered after a much better location than Crawley where we have been living, we have now moved to Littlehampton on the West Sussex coast. A lovely location, with many interesting areas around for Us to explore - given time. The first week saw me taking a few phone photos, but not actually getting out with the camera. Finally, a week after we moved into the superb South facing flat that we have rented, a day off from work yielded favourable conditions for an adve
