Waves, Motion & Sunset

The weather has been disappointing for a few weeks, with much rain and wind which combined sometimes with adverse tide heights at the relevant times have precluded me from taking sunset photos (never mind sunrise either).

This afternoon was very pleasant and with sunset due while the tide was midway through incoming, I ventured out onto East Beach to take advantage of the decent conditions.

My plan was to shoot patterns and movement from incoming waves ahead of the sun setting later.

I initially tried to capture the ebb and flow of the waves and tide, before noticing that the waves 'bouncing back' towards the sea from a sloping beach area were colliding with incoming waves and the resulting collision caused an upward splash - some being more dramatic than others.

Then I looked at a composition that included a wooden groyne and the splashes as waves hit against it as they crashed ashore.

Next I tried a view straighter on to the sea along that groyne, changing the view gave an even more dramatic photo. What was nice in both of these views was the sunlight on the white water as the waves broke.

I crossed to the other side of the groyne to see what was possible and, with the sunset almost ready, I looked West and noticed the water from the waves pouring off the groyne after the initial wave had passed.

After that, it was time to start concentrating on the sunset and I immediately noticed the reflection of the colours in the wet sand and the shallow water as waves washed ashore. The sun was still a little bright and high at this time, but colour and reflection too tempting.

Thereafter, the sun gradually set and the range of colours improved as the clouds took on some colour. The reflections also looked better, though I failed to dodge the incoming waves and ended up with wet feet.

Soon though the colour was gone, as the sun set below the horizon and there was no sign of the much hoped for after glow that often occurs.

This had been though, a very rewarding little venture onto the beach and one that was very welcome after more than 3 weeks of unsuitable conditions.
